From diarrhoea to breathlessness; know the serious side effects of eating moong beans (2024)

New Delhi: Moon dal is a staple Indian ingredient eaten as a standalone dal or served as a porridge with other vegetables. Both yellow and green moong beans are highly nutritious and have immense health benefits.

Some of the known benefits of the moong are:

  • Help in managing weight issues: Pulses like moong (both green and yellow) are loaded with fibre and protein. They help keep the tummy full for a longer time and ease digestion as well so that you do not feel like snacking all the time.
  • Help in healthy cell buildup: Apart from proteins, the moong beans are rich in iron, folate, and vitamins that aid the regulated health of body cells and their repair and renewal. The iron content in moong dal reduces the risk of developing anemia.
  • Improves heart health: Moong beans are also apart from being highly nutritious, great for the heart.

So, these benefits can be reaped by regularly consuming moong dal. However, like everything else, lentils can have some serious side effects if eaten too much. A few of those side effects are:

  • If left uncooked, the lentils can cause extreme gas, heartburn, and even bloating. Some more serious side effects include dizziness, diarrhoea, and nausea as well.
  • Beans can cause body sensitivity and for many people moong beans can also lead to breathlessness, and itching on the skin,
  • Too much dietary fibre in moong dal can also cause stomach problems and poor absorption of nutrients.
  • In pregnant women, negatives of the dal include severe abdominal cramps as a result of bacterial infection caused by poorly cleaned sprouts.
