Howard House, Bangor, 1869 (2024)

Contributed by Bangor Public Library

Description

Frequently claimed as Bangor's oldest house, Howard House was built in 1771 on (now) Howard and State Streets, opposite what is today the Eastern Maine Medical Center. A much modified cape style house, it was nonetheless sizeable, proclaiming the prosperity of the family.

The ell shown on the right of this photograph, probably added later in the 19th century, played an important part in creating a sheltered, sunny nook--doubtless appreciated by the owner of the spinning wheel when this image was taken in 1869.

In the late 1890s the house was bought by A.H. Thaxter, who made significant enlargements and alterations, and later still it was used as a residence by the nurses at the neighboring Eastern Maine General Hospital. It was demolished in 1930s.
