McDonald’s has expanded its meat-free offerings with a brand-new vegan burger after fans of the McPlant had been calling for more. The Double McPlant was announced in December, and launched in stores across the UK on Wednesday (January 4).
Prior to the launch of the “long-awaited and much-requested” burger, the fast-food giant said it was releasing the Double McPlant “just in time for those taking part in Veganuary or those who just simply crave a tasty new burger from McDonald’s.” It comes almost a year to the day since the single-patty McPlant was rolled out nationwide on January 5 last year.
“The undeniably delicious McPlant, which took over three years to develop, features a patty co-created with Beyond Meat and has already proved wildly successful with customers since its launch,” McDonald’s said. “It’s no secret that people went wild for the taste, with many taking to Twitter to express their desire for a doubled-up version.”

And just like those on social media, I too felt like the McPlant could have done with expanding upon. I’ve been vegan for more than three years, but used to love a McDonald’s in my meat-eating days and used to frequently find myself craving a trip to the golden arches once I went vegan.
I’m sure like many others, I felt it was a big deal when the fast-food chain finally launched the McPlant. But while just the fact that a meat-free Maccies exists is something in itself, and the burger is tasty, I felt it never quite did the trick and always left me wanting more.
So now they’ve gone ahead and launched the Double McPlant, I thought I’d nip to my local store and try one for myself to see if it lives up to the hype. I purchased one as part of a medium Extra Value Meal along with fries and a drink for £6.59, while the burger can also be bought individually for £5.09.

It is made up of two Beyond Meat patties, a vegan sesame bun, mustard, ketchup, the “ultimate” vegan sandwich sauce, fresh onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and vegan cheese. Although when I got home and opened it up my initial thought was that it didn’t look like anything to write home about, once I dived in, I have to say it had pretty much everything you’d want from a McDonald’s burger.
It had that recognisible McDonald’s taste, while the two patties were juicy, had a meat-like texture, and definitely tasted just like a meaty McDonald’s burger. I also noticed no discernable difference between the vegan cheese on the Double McPlant and the chain’s regular cheese.
And the sauce – described simply as “vegan sandwich sauce” and not dissimilar from that found on a McChicken Sandwich – combined with the dollop of ketchup and hint of mustard was a great and flavoursome combination. Along with perhaps the most divisive ingredient – the gherkins – which for me are an essential item and really completed the burger.
It’s safe to say I demolished the Double McPlant in just a couple of minutes and it certainly filled a gap – much more so than its single-patty counterpart. Although it can’t hold a candle to premium vegan burgers like Beyond’s own brand, for a fast-food option it definitely does the job, especially considering the price and compared to its competitors like Burger King.
Now if they could just come up with a vegan Big Mac sauce, they’d surely be on to a winner.
