A new Skyrim mod now makes it possible to leave the dragon fighting and Shouting to one side and pursue a more subdued lifestyle than the one the Dragonborn lives. Given that The Elder Scrolls series has a lot of history and lore, there will likely be people out there who are curious about what it's like to just be a soldier, a hunter, or even a villain. Being the center of each game's narrative is a key part of the experience, but maybe some just want to be more like an NPC.
There are already a lot of fan-made modifications for Bethesda's 2011 epic RPG that change up how the game is enjoyed. For example, there's a mod that lets Skyrim players work a 9-5 admin job, and on the other end of that spectrum, there's one in which the Dragonborn can be become Jarl of Solitude. There's a lot of choice when it comes to vocations in Tamriel, and it seems the modding community is only too keen to step up and give people such opportunities.

Much like the aforementioned 9-5 add-on, this particular Skyrim mod means the player can ditch the Dragonborn lifestyle in favor of something perhaps more humble. Called "I Am Not The Dragonborn," Lobo 22's mod disables the ability to absorb dragon souls, except for the "Golden Claw" quest. It also removes any instances in which NPCs will refer to the player as the Dragonborn. The crux of it is that it's now possible to take on a different role. While being a hero is still attainable, Lobo 22 refers to it as being a "common hero," and there are opportunities to even become a soldier as well.
The mod ends Skyrim's main questline after the "Dragon Rising" mission, and from thereon, the player is free to pursue other interests without the ability to Shout or absorb a dragon soul. The creator states that the mod requires a brand-new save, and it also won't work with the alternative opening mod "Skyrim Unbound." In general, it sounds like an interesting way for fans to try something different, especially because many have already played through the same experience over and over after 11 years.
Of course, that doesn't stop Skyrim from being one of the best open-world games of all time, but it's nice to see there are new ways to play. Skryim's success cannot be overstated, and while some may feel the game has outstayed its welcome, there are plenty of dedicated people in the modding community who are helping to extend the game's shelf life.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
