There’s nothing like waking up on Christmas morning and finding out Santa has taken a few nibbles out of the treats you left him the night before. Then opening the huge pile of presents he’s left for you.
In preparation for this year (so you can get some new ideas), we asked our loyal taste.com.au readers: what do you leave Santa as a snack on Christmas Eve?
The responses were a real throwback. Here are the most popular ones.
Gingerbread, cookies, shortbread – all the biscuits
By far the most popular choice, Santa definitely loves his bikkies. Everything from homemade honey biscuits to gingerbread, choc-chip cookies and shortbread decorated to look like Santa himself made the list.
Mince pies
A Christmas classic, many taste.com.au readers chose to leave Santa a warming mince pie. Also appearing on the list: a slice of fruit cake, Christmas pudding etc.
A glass of milk
Because Santa needs strong bones if he’s going to be up all night delivering presents (one reader even said she added some Penta Vite to their glass, for extra sustenance). Pity he would only ever have time to drink half the glass…
A glass of water
Because in an Australian summer, it’s “irresponsible” to leave a glass of milk out.
All types of alcohol
Beer, Guinness, a glass of port… you name it, taste.com.au readers have left it.
An invoice
Not really in the Christmas spirit but… fair enough.
Cheese and Jatz
A classic Aussie snack, Santa would always polish off this classic cheese and bikkie combination.
Homemade oat sprinkle
One reader created a “special homemade oat sprinkle” and scattered it over the front lawn to make sure the reindeer visited the house. Now that’s cute.
Water and carrots
You can’t forget about the hungry, hard-working reindeers! (Or kangaroos. Sometimes Santa has kangaroos).
