Almost exactly 5 years ago I started at GoFundMe in their Happiness department (customer support). Today was my last day along with so so so many other talented people. It was devastating to learn of each person impacted by the layoffs.Initially, I applied to GoFundMe in 2015 and got rejected. So I applied again. And again. And again. I applied 5 times before finally being hired on my sixth attempt. I was hell-bent on getting in to this company and I wasn't gonna take no for an answer.I worked with some of the most incredible individuals and teams. I've met heroes who have impacted their community. We were a huge part in helping people with paying for medical bills, getting through the pandemic when small businesses were closing, supporting the me too movement.I moved from Happiness into product design - something I never dreamed could happen. When people ask me during their interviews what I love most about GoFundMe, aside from the amazing people, I'd always answer that it gave me the opportunity to move into this role. I'm grateful for every team I've been on. No one ever treated me like I didn't belong because I didn't have a formal education in my new role - they helped me flourish and grow. The outreaches I got today have only made me shed happy tears and tears of sadness that our days of working together are over.I can only hope that my future teams will be as supportive and amazing as my GoFundMe family. ❤️

Man Theresa, when I saw this, I was floored. You've always been one of those people I truly couldn't imagine the company without. It's an understatement to say that you've left a lasting mark. I remember when we were all high-key panicked when you left Happiness because you were our go-to for all things. If there was a problem, you either knew the fix already, or did everything possible to test it into the ground. But not only that, you're so down to earth, personable, talented beyond belief, wicked smart, and funny as heck. You're the kick of flavor that made our good team a great one. Sending all my love and wishes to you, knowing that you'll absolutely crush any adventure that comes your way from here 💖🐦

Theresa this is so hard to accept 😢 I'm so glad I got to see you in the office the other day, but it also makes this even harder and more painful. I cannot even express how much I have loved working with you. And watching your transition into becoming a designer and absolutely killing it has been the COOLEST and most inspiring—you're pretty much just the coolest all around. I so hope to see you soon, and I would be truly delighted if we could work together again in the future. Miss you already, sending a big hug 💚

Theresa, I've procrastinated responding to this because I didn't want to accept it was real and true. I'm heartbroken for both of us. I don't even know how to thank you for all of the many ways you've supported and advocated for for me, particularly in the last year. I've never worked with anyone so thoughtful, creative, collaborative, and hilarious. Thank you for answering my thousands of questions and never losing your patience. No matter what, you were always around to help and make me laugh. You are an incredible designer and I'm so inspired by your creativity. I know you're going to continue doing great things. Let's keep creating together :)

You're one of the coolest, nicest, most talented people I've had the pleasure of working with, and your work over the years was such a testament to exactly how talented and impactful you've been. I'm very grateful to have had coworkers like you over these past years.

Theresa, I am sad to read this and while there are no right words to say, I’m always here as a friend to help in whatever your next step may be. You are an absolute rockstar, smart, empathetic, and whoever hires you next will be lucky to have you. I am lucky to have you as a friend. The Force lives forever.

Over 40 applications later and I've found myself finally removing that #opentowork badge.I'm so so so happy to say that I'm joining the incredible design team at Walmart and I just can't wait to get started on Monday! The past five months have been full of rejections, disappointment, self-doubt, questioning my skills and whether I was qualified for this field. I've also learned that I am capable and resilient. And I really don't think I could have also done this alone--having a community of supportive people was so important. Getting laid off can really make you question everything about yourself and it's easy to let those thoughts consume you. Thank you to all that helped me through this time doing practice interviews, reviewing my portfolio and design exercises, giving me feedback on my resume and sitting through my presentations, and just being there for me when I needed to whine and be heard. You know who you are and I am eternally grateful to you all. #newjob #design
