🍫 The History of Hagelslag
The history of these Dutch sprinkles is actually quite interesting. Although it was initially known as white aniseed-flavored sprinkles, the hagelslag that's sold today was created when a five-year-old boy contacted the Venz chocolate factory requesting for them to make a chocolate topping for his bread.
The company created chocolate sprinkles to satisfy the boys' request in 1936, which have since become a staple in Dutch households.

- Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles)
- Bread
- Butter

💭 FAQs
What is hagelslag?
Hagelslag gets its name from its resemblance to hail and doesn't just refer to the chocolate sprinkles variety. There are actually over 20 varieties of hagelslag (including chocolate, fruit, and aniseed) in the Netherlands.
What if I can't find hagelslag?
While hagelslag may look similar to the waxy American sprinkles, hagelslag is far superior because they actually have flavor. True Dutch chocolate hagelslag must contain at least 32 percent cocoa, in order to be considered "hagelslag." While technically, any sprinkles could work when you're in a pinch, it does not do this recipe any justice. I highly recommend using the real thing, which is easy to find on Amazon!

I'm Dutch ans grew up eating this for breakfast. It's also wonderful on a Dutch Rusk. The hagelslag comes in milk and dark chocolate, and also comes in flakes. You can also find them at a lot of World Market locations.

My kids would absolutely love it if I let them put chocolate on their bread for breakfast - such a fun idea. I hadn't heard of hagelslag before but much funner to say than chocolate jimmies!
