Easy & tasty. I've made it twice. Once with sliced sausage in the casing, once by removing the casings (preferred). I also used Rigatoni once & Penne once. My suggestion, without really making any changes to ingredients, is to either double everything except the pasta & pepper flakes OR make as listed but only use half the box of pasta. I found that the pasta to ingredient ratio is way off, too much pasta & too little "stuff". I'd increase the broccoli in either case. Mushrooms would be good.

I've been making this simple thing the wrong way for years. Surprised, but it got great reviews from my guestsWho would have guessed you could make this without onion?Added some sliced mushrooms.

I’ve made a version of this for my family for years! I use red/yellow/green peppers sliced long ways then sear slightly in a bit of hot olive oil, Add whole or halved fresh mushrooms, al dente broccoli florets, fresh garlic and sliced sweet (or red!) onions. (I occasionally will add hot Italian sausage which I cook separately but not all the time and I rarely add pasta - don’t need the carbs.) I sprinkle chunks of goat cheese towards the end of the cooking process & it’s delicious!

I’ve cooked a version of this for decades, albeit minus the peppers—and sometimes the garlic as it gets lost especially with spicy sausage. However, given the bold flavors, pecorino is a better choice than parmigiano and best of course when freshly grated.

We can’t get sweet or spicy Italian sausage easily in the UK... it would be great to sometime have a NYT recipe for spicing simple ground pork to get the taste of different American sausages: Italian sweet, Italian spicy, breakfast, etc.

Thomas Sherman

Excellent recipe. I took the advice of others and doubled the vegetables, except that I roasted the broccoli in the oven at 450° until slightly browned. I sautéed the peppers with the garlic and oil, and essentially did everything else as described. We enjoyed it completely.

I'm going to substitute salmon (wild-caught flaked right out of the can) at the end of step 2 in place of the sausage in step 1. Our family likes salmon with broccoli, peppers, garlic, and lemon, so this may be a good way to get more omega-rich fish into our rotation.

Kate

This was Italian restaurant-level delicious. I could only find unseasoned sausage (at the market here in the Netherlands) so I threw dried oregano and chili flakes into the pan at the outset.

Deborah VC

Easy and a delicious, substantial pasta. I used a head of romanesco florets, 3 links of Trader Joe’s sausage-less sausage, sliced into thin coins, and 1/2 of rigatoni, as other readers suggested. More garlic and hot pepper flakes (personal preference). The yellow peppers and lemon really added to the dish. We’ll be making this often.

Diana

Made 1/2 recipe, with the addition of sliced sweet onion, mushrooms and rosemary with a splash of white wine. Simple, tasty, and easily enough for 3. Don’t skimp on the veg.

breezyvalley

I have been making this for years also---but there's no wrong way! I use chopped onion, sometimes mushrooms, but always add a splash of dry white wine at the end

Lots of flavor! Very important to keep the pasta al dente or it won’t stand up to the vigorous stir at the end. Love the suggestion to add mushrooms and/or onion. The lemon threatened to overwhelm the dish; I would use a bit less next time.

Brad

I made this using 3 peppers (red, yellow and orange) and a sweet onion (of course). According to our taste, I used spicy Italian sausage. It was excellent!

I have been making a version of this for years without the peppers, and I didn't find they added much. I throw the broccoli florets in the boiling water while the pasta is cooking to save a step, and they turn out fine.As several other people have said, either halve the pasta or double the veggies.

Absolutely delicious and so easy! Followed recipe as written. Great week night meal. Will be making this again! Be sure to cook pasta aldente. Cooking with pasta water in final step takes a couple of minutes to bring the cheese to proper creaminess.

Boring. A collection of disparate textures and flavors. The only seasoning comes from the sausage, but there is no sauce to speak of to carry that through. I took the (substantial) leftovers, made a well-seasoned bechamel, combined in casserole dish, topped with breadcrumbs, and baked. Rescued, but I won’t bother with this one again.

Kay Kuma

Per some of the comments, I added a thinly sliced sweet onion and reduced the pasta to 1/2-lb. I didn’t have enough broccoli, so I added lacinato kale. It came out great!

Burrata topping!

A generous spoonful of burrata is the perfect finishing touch on this dish!

Faith

Like many others I added additional veg - cremini mushroom and onion. I sauteed the baby broccoli I had for a few minutes before adding additional veg. Left the garlic towards the end. Added a bit of white wine at the end. I had Meyer Lemon which was amazing. Can't wait to see how it tastes tomorrow it was so good today.

Mel

Definitely a go to for a work/school night dinner. Only hot sausage, though, and extra red pepper. It can go so many different ways, too. I added shallots and mushrooms, too.

Alison

What a great dish this is and a good way to incorporate different vegetables too. I used ground hot turkey sausage removed from the casings which browns so nice and crumbly and this would be good with veggie or vegan sausages too. Followed others’ advice and only used about 1/3 lb of penne pasta for 2 of us and we will enjoy another meal of leftovers. A bit of wine or a splash of cream makes the sauce extra tasty but it’s also great as written with less pasta. Will go into my regular rotation!

I started making this before reading all the notes. So I removed half of cooked pasta . Great idea. I used spicy bulk Italian sausage . I did add water to the broccoli and pepper pan . Next time I would toss the broccoli in with the pasta the last 3 min or parcook with water then toss in my peppers . My pepper got over cooked . I would like to try the sun dried tomatoes and multicolor peppers . Over a great flexible with minimal work I am saving my broccoli stems for another recipe

Max

Great! Just that I replaced the sausage by Salmon. And instead of 1 Cup of Pasta water, I took 1 Cup from the Broccoli steam water. After steaming the broccoli let it shortly cook with just the salmon in the skillet before adding everything else from the recipe into the pod.

Aimee

Loved this, really simple and veg heavy. Used chicken sausage to lighten it up. Everyone ate it but peppers aren’t a big hit so next time maybe I’ll just use broccoli.

Kdg

Simple and flexible and good. Looked at another broccoli pasta recipe that included mint which seemed odd but I threw in some chopped mint leaves and with the lemon and peppers it was quite nice and I will think of broccoli and mint in the future.

Shoba

Good, flavorful - not pasta sauce - pasta. A couple of modifications: used 12 ounces of pasta instead of 16 and it was a good balance. 16oz would be too much pasta. In Step 2, instead of returning the pasta to its cooking pot, I drained it and added it straight back to the broccoli, peppers, etc. mix. Made more sense and worked well.

Great recipe, but I think the ratio of pasta to meat and vegetables is off--I would use 1/2 to 3/4 the amount of pasta. Otherwise, great recipe; we'll make this again.

John

Very easy weeknight meal that comes together pretty quickly (and kept well for leftovers the next day). Like many others, I added mushrooms (shiitakes) and will probably add an onion next time. Sauteed the peppers/mushrooms in some olive oil in a separate pan for a few minutes. Used bulk italian sausage and a different large pasta (didn't have rigatoni). Once everything was together, I added butter, heavy cream, and more parmesan/lemon juice/pepper and covered for ~5 minutes. Excellent.

PW

This was very good and easy to cook. I doubled the vegs and cut the pasta amount in half as well. I also added onion to mine as I has some I needed to use up.

joeb

This is so delicious it’s hard to believe it’s so easy! As others have shared, half the pasta, bump up the veggies a bit, add onion and a splash of white wine at the end. Simple and perfect for a weeknight dinner!
