What is the traditional Marianna sub? ›

Also called "The Original," this one's old school: Genoa Salami, Imported Ham, and Provolone Cheese. Marianna's original recipe still stands strong!

It's up to you. Marianna's pizzas and hoagies are a great way to create a quick and easy lunch or dinner. Even if you don't want to eat them right away, the hoagies will keep well in the fridge, and the pizzas can be frozen.

As any Philadelphian knows, a hoagie by any other name — sub, grinder, hero, zeppelin, or poor boy — isn't a hoagie. But, as with most things that are off-the-chart delicious, hoagies aren't the healthiest things on the menu. In fact, a classic Italian hoagie has roughly: 700 calories.

A hoagie is a bread roll sandwich piled high with deli meats, cheese, fixings and dressing, and is usually at least six inches long. The term 'hoagie' is most commonly used in Philadelphia and South Jersey, and has several possible origin stories.

“Sub,” short for “submarine sandwich,” is said to come from Connecticut, where what was originally called a grinder became a sub because of the sandwich's uncanny resemblance to the submarines in a nearby naval shipyard.

As many parts of South Jersey know, it's actually called a Hoagie. Don't let any of these impostors fool you. If you call it a "sub," well, that's fine, I guess, but you'll never hear me uttering that word.

The one mystery to me in the hoagie line up was "The Nigerian" and while that is all it says on their signage I learned that it is a combination of turkey, roast beef, corned beef, and cheese with the tomatoes and onions if you'd like.
