Measure the height of the blade tips on each side of the deck from the ground. Adjust the deck by loosening the hex bolt on the left hangar bracket. Raise or lower the deck by turning the adjustment gear. When both blade tips have the same measurement from the ground, tighten the hex bolt.

How do you tell what year a John Deere mower is? You can find the model and serial number on a tag under the seat or under the hood or someplace on the mower. Write these numbers down and call a J D dealer and the dealer will tell you when it was built, and if you can still get parts for it.

If you have less than 1⁄2 acre to mow, you can probably get by with a 42” or 48” deck size like those found on our RZ-HD or RZ-C mowers. If your yard is mid-sized (1⁄2 to 2 acres), decks that are in the 54” category typically work nicely!

Measuring the Deck Size

Start by locating the discharge chute on the side of the mower deck. This is where the grass clippings are ejected from the deck. Measure the distance from one side of the discharge chute to the other side of the deck. This will give you the width of the deck, which is the deck size.

It's powered by a 17.5 HP Briggs and Stratton® single-cylinder engine featuring a 42-in. steel deck. Its 7-speed transmission, paired with its low-back seat, will help you comfortably maneuver through 18-in. radius turns with ease.

For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck.

As a general rule, you'll want to level your mowing deck one to two times per season and additionally after coming into contact with obstructions like curbs, particularly if it's been a forceful bump.

Should the front of a mower deck be higher or lower than the rear? ›

Should the front of the mower run lower than the rear? Yes. The grass is cut on the front side of the mower and not at the rear. This leaves a better and more consistent cut and aides in better material distribution.

Use any method desired, just as long as the front of the deck is pitched about 1/4 inch lower than the rear of the mower deck and that the measurements at the front of the deck match the mower's cutting height selection. To lower the front of the deck if it is too high: Loosen the nuts on the front deck hangers.
