The men obtained $8,000 from the couple for roof work, police and city officials said. The amount would have been $18,000 had the couple not written the wrong amount on a check, Lockport Mayor Frank Mitchell said. "We strongly urge citizens to be very cautious when they are approached by unsolicited offers," Detective Sgt. Dave Draksler said. "If they are approached by persons offering to do repairs, do not open your doors to these people.

Immediately call the police so that we can investigate the situation." Lockport police have been taking calls from residents all summer about men offering to do unsolicited home repair work. The department issued public warnings but felt compelled to renew the effort after the most recent case resulted in a major OBITUARIES Octavia Horvath (nee Dan), 87, of Oak Lawn died Oct. 23. In May, police said an older couple in the 1200 block of Cleveland Street reported what appeared to be an attempted con. The husband came home to find a suspicious man standing in his garage. The man told the husband he was a repairman, and offered to work on the roof. While the two men were talking about the repairs, the wife found another man inside the home. The man asked her to break a $100 bill.

When she said she couldn't, the two men left. Then this month, an elderly woman reported a repairman entered her house and distracted her while an accomplice stole valuables, Mitchell said. Police are not ruling out the possibility the incidents are connected, Draksler said. City officials periodically warn residents about scam artists through a monthly newsletter and on the local public access channel, Mitchell said. Officials recommend residents seek multiple bids for a repair job and reject unsolicited offers.
